Nature Play Exhibits
(with partner Denver Parks and Recreation)
Denver Museum of Nature and Science (Colorado)
This unique project was several years in the making, with community listening events engaging scores of local groups and organizations, including children! Following the “Explore Colorado” dioramas inside the museum, this outdoor playscape showcases the state’s diverse ecosystems—with unstructured, narrative-based play as a guide.
ECOS worked with DMNS to think creatively about opportunities to incorporate experiential, self-directed engagement. Using the backdrop of Colorado’s natural beauty, we developed concepts for “Discovery Signs”—small graphic panels that promote curiosity and encourage exploration, rather than convey information. Our tactile sculptures also animate the site, enriching the interpretive experience for all.
Our team worked closely with the museum, DPR staff, and other partners to make the interpretation inviting and accessible to as many of Denver’s residents and visitors as possible. Evocative headers, equivalent-sized Spanish and English text, custom shapes, engaging artwork and tactile elements invite visitors into their own revelations.
