Chip was a nature nut from an early age, and now spends most of his time on projects helping kids and other audiences appreciate natural and cultural wonders. He serves primarily as creative director at ECOS, but wears many hats. He has designed and written hundreds of natural and cultural history exhibits and created dozens of interpretive and visitor experience master plans.
A designer, writer, sculptor, photographer and biologist, Chip is often responsible for the blend of art, education and science on ECOS exhibits, signage, sculpture and environmental graphics, publications, digital media, interpretive programs, site plans and other efforts. ECOS projects are filled with examples of Chip’s sculpture and photography, as well as work created by other artists but informed by Chip’s art direction and natural history expertise.
Chip’s experience as an interpretive educator/guide trainer and conservation outreach consultant spans both formal and non-formal learning environments, in the U.S. and abroad. His creative and entrepreneurial thinking has helped support and launch large-scale non-profit and for-profit conservation efforts (for example, see www.biologicalcapital.com).
Prior to co-founding ECOS more than 20 years ago, Chip worked for the School for Field Studies, Outward Bound, and World Wildlife Fund. Chip has a master’s degree from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies with an emphasis on environmental communication and conservation biology. He has a bachelor of science degree in biology from Lewis and Clark College.
