Project: Icebarge, A Call to Climate Change Action

Description: ECOS Communications is dedicated to raising awareness about major environmental issues, and promoting individual conservation behavior. The Icebarge concept—developed by ECOS—stems from this commitment, and is intended to raise awareness about international climate change policy and negotiations.

The central idea is to load a small iceberg onto a submersible barge and bring it into the ports of New York and/or Copenhagen. The Icebarge and its website would attract visitors and ultimately allow them to upload 20-second video statements answering the question: Why act now? The statements would be streamed on via Internet and projected at various locations around Copenhagen during the Climate Summit (December, 2009). The Icebarge would then move south down the U.S. and European coasts during the winter, paired with concert tours and other large- and small-scale media efforts.

The Icebarge or other related ideas (see attached PDF) would elicit the general public’s engagement in the Climate Treaty's international negotiations, which will likely continue through the winter of 2010. A purely web-based expression of the idea, using Twitter, YouTube and/or other social media, is also being explored by ECOS.

This exciting idea is being considered by a variety of high profile organizations and individuals. ECOS is interested in remaining active in the overall vision, and perhaps in implementing some of the education/outreach efforts.
